Dutch police quickly recognized the telltale sign. A snow-free roof often points to indoor cannabis cultivation. Growing marijuana on a large scale requires powerful lamps, heaters, and ventilation systems—all of which generate intense heat. That heat rises, escaping through the roof and melting snow almost instantly, even in freezing conditions.

The Discovery Inside
When officers searched the house, they found a fully equipped cannabis farm: rows of plants under glaring artificial lights, humid air heavy with the smell of marijuana, and specialized ventilation systems. The operation was so large that the heat alone kept the roof clear while surrounding homes remained covered in snow.
This was far from the first case. Similar raids in Haarlem, Zutphen, and Arnhem uncovered farms ranging from 88 plants hidden in a spare bedroom to nearly 500 plants worth €50,000.

After these discoveries, Dutch police turned to social media and local news, urging residents to report suspiciously bare or patchy roofs during winter. “Sometimes, the snow tells you more than the neighbors,” one officer remarked.

Individuals may possess up to five grams for personal use, but growing more than five plants is illegal.
