Teachers often go above and beyond their daily duties, shaping lives far beyond the classroom. One such example is Jonathan Oliver, a physical education teacher at WG Nunn Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia, whose simple act of kindness has now gone viral.
During a kindergarten basketball game, one of his young players, Kristen Paulk, asked for help with her hair. Without hesitation, Coach Oliver knelt down on a basketball, carefully tying her ponytail to keep it out of her eyes.
What he didn’t realize was that another teacher, Kandice Anderson, was recording the moment. She later uploaded the clip to YouTube with the caption: “When your job goes beyond teaching!” Within hours, the video captured national attention, eventually landing Oliver on Good Morning America.
“It Was Just a Ponytail”
Oliver, a 34-year-old father of three, was surprised by all the attention.
“It was shocking to me that it got that much attention because we all do it,” he said. “We want kids to feel like they’re at home and that they enjoy being here. To me, it was just a ponytail.”
He admitted that while he often helps his daughter with her hair, his skills are limited. Laughing, he added: “It was a good thing she asked for a ponytail. Anything else, I’d say, ‘You better ask your mom.’”
Parents Grateful for the Extra Care
Kristen’s mom, Miyah Cleckley, said the video touched her deeply.
“I always know Kristen is in good hands with him. I thought it was really cute because her father does their hair a lot—we have five girls and one son, so when I’m working, he takes care of their hairstyles too.”
