When a 400-pound black bear in Florida ran into the ocean after being tranquilized, it was seconds from drowning. One brave man dove in and saved its life.
A Routine Call Turns Dangerous
In 2008, residents of Alligator Point, Florida, were shocked to see a 400-pound black bear wandering through their neighborhood. Wildlife officers with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) quickly arrived to safely remove the animal.
The plan was simple: sedate the bear with a tranquilizer dart and then transport it back to the wild. At first, everything went smoothly—the dart hit its mark. But moments later, the situation turned into a life-or-death emergency.
A Sedated Bear Heads for the Ocean
Startled by the sting of the dart, the bear bolted straight toward the Gulf of Mexico. Once in the water, the tranquilizer began to take effect.
Disoriented and groggy, the massive animal struggled to stay afloat. Before long, the 400-pound bear was in danger of drowning.
The Hero Who Refused to Let the Bear Die
That’s when Adam Warwick, a wildlife biologist with FWC, made a decision that stunned everyone. Without hesitation, he dove into the ocean after the bear.
“It was a spur-of-the-moment decision,” Warwick later explained. “I had a lot of adrenaline pumping when I saw the bear in the water.”
Fully aware of the risks—after all, a 400-pound predator could lash out at any moment—Warwick swam toward the struggling animal.
A Life-Saving Swim
Amazingly, the bear didn’t resist. Warwick gently positioned himself alongside the animal and began guiding it toward shore.

The journey ended at Osceola National Forest, a large protected area where the black bear could live far from human neighborhoods.

Thanks to Adam Warwick’s fearless action, a tragedy was avoided. The black bear survived, returning to its natural home, and Warwick became a quiet hero.
