A Music Legend Gone Too Soon
Ricky Nelson, born Eric Hilliard Nelson in 1940, became one of America’s most beloved teen idols. Starring alongside his famous parents and brother on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Ricky charmed audiences with both his acting and music.
By his late teens, he was already earning over $100,000 a year. His debut single, “I’m Walking,” launched him into stardom, followed by classics like “Travelin’ Man” and “Garden Party.”
In 1963, Ricky married actress Kristin Harmon, and together they had four children — including twins Matthew and Gunnar, who would later carry on his musical legacy.
A Fear That Proved True
Despite his glamorous life, Ricky struggled with one deep fear: flying. Still, touring demanded it, and he continued to travel by air throughout his career.
In late 1985, he planned to take his sons along to a New Year’s Eve concert in Dallas. But something inside him — a feeling he couldn’t shake — made him change his mind. At the last moment, he told Matthew and Gunnar not to board the plane.
That decision would save their lives.
The Fatal Plane Crash
On December 31, 1985, Ricky Nelson’s DC-3 aircraft caught fire mid-air. Witnesses reported smoke pouring from the cabin as the plane struggled to stay airborne.
The pilot attempted an emergency landing, but tragedy struck. Ricky, his fiancée, and other passengers perished in the fire. Miraculously, the pilots survived.
The true cause remains a mystery. Investigators suspected a faulty gas heater, though rumors about drug use were strongly denied by Ricky’s family. His daughter, Tracy Nelson, later said she believed the crash was purely mechanical.
A Father’s Legacy Lives On
Though Ricky’s life ended in tragedy, his instinctive choice not to bring his twins that day preserved their future. Matthew and Gunnar Nelson went on to form the rock band Nelson, achieving chart-topping hits in the 1990s.
