The U.S. Senate just passed the No Tax on Tips Act, a bill that could make tips tax-free for service industry workers. Here’s what it means for your paycheck.

A Historic Win for Service Workers

In a rare show of bipartisan unity, the U.S. Senate has unanimously passed the No Tax on Tips Act — a groundbreaking bill that could change how millions of Americans are paid.

The legislation, introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) and co-sponsored by Senator Jacky Rosen (Nevada), would exempt tips from federal taxation, giving a much-needed financial boost to hospitality, food service, and delivery workers.

“These workers deserve to keep more of what they earn,” Cruz said. Rosen added that in states with strong tourism industries, this bill shows service employees “the respect and support they deserve.”

What the Bill Actually Does

Currently, tipped employees must report all tips as taxable income, and employers are required to withhold federal taxes.

If enacted, the No Tax on Tips Act would:
✅ Allow workers to keep 100% of their tips, tax-free
✅ Apply only to tips (not wages, salaries, or bonuses)
✅ Simplify recordkeeping for both workers and employers

For many employees living paycheck to paycheck, this could mean thousands of dollars in extra take-home pay each year.

What Happens Next

The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for debate. Supporters are optimistic it could become law, despite questions from some tax experts about enforcement and Social Security contributions.

If approved, this legislation would represent not only financial relief, but also national recognition of the vital role service workers play in the economy.
