A routine grocery run turned into a nightmare for British grandfather Neville Linton when he discovered a live snake inside a head of broccoli purchased from Aldi.
Neville, who has a lifelong fear of snakes, said the experience was “absolutely terrifying,” especially because he lives with his disabled son and elderly mother-in-law.
From Insect to Snake
At first, Neville thought the creature was just a large insect. But when it slithered, he realized it was a snake. Unsure how to handle the situation, he immediately called his sister, who confirmed the shocking discovery.
The reptile was later contained safely and taken to Dudley Zoo, where staff identified it as a young ladder snake.
What Experts Say
Ladder snakes are non-venomous and native to southwestern Europe. While harmless to humans, they often end up in supermarkets when accidentally harvested with crops. Experts assured the public that the incident posed no danger but admitted it could be very distressing for unsuspecting shoppers.

A New Home for the Snake
The young ladder snake has now found a permanent home at Dudley Zoo. It will become part of the zoo’s educational programs on wildlife and biodiversity, turning a frightening ordeal into a chance for learning.
