After more than two decades of unanswered questions, a cold case in Arkansas has finally seen heartbreaking closure. The car of Samantha Jean Hopper, a young mother who vanished in 1998 with her daughter, has been found submerged in water—along with human remains believed to be theirs.
The discovery was made by Adventures With Purpose (AWP), a nonprofit team dedicated to solving cold cases using advanced sonar technology. Hopper’s blue Ford Tempo was located in just eight feet of water, ending a mystery that haunted her family for 23 years.
The Day Samantha Vanished
On September 11, 1998, 19-year-old Samantha Hopper was reportedly on her way to drop off her daughter, Courtney Holt, before attending a concert in Little Rock. Tragically, neither Samantha, her daughter, nor her vehicle were ever seen again—until now.
When investigators pulled the car from the water, they confirmed that human remains were inside. These have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for DNA testing.
A Family’s Long-Awaited Closure
The Pope County Sheriff’s Office released a statement:
“We send our deepest condolences to the family of Samantha Hopper and Courtney Holt. We are grateful to have played a small role in bringing closure to this 23-year-old case.”
Adding to the heartbreak, Samantha was nine months pregnant at the time of her disappearance. Her surviving daughter, Dezarea, shared that while the discovery was painful, it was also a relief to finally know the truth.
AWP also expressed their condolences, writing:
“Samantha and her two babies have now been brought home.”
