A British woman was tragically found dead without a head after disappearing from a Greek beach. Her husband blames local police for delays in the search. Here’s what we know about the heartbreaking case.
A Holiday Turns Tragic
A relaxing holiday in Greece turned into a nightmare for a British couple after 59-year-old Michele Bourda from Glasgow disappeared from a beach in Kavala, northern Greece, on August 1.
Michele had been sunbathing with her husband, Chris, 66, on Ofrynio beach. After going for a swim, Chris took a nap on their sunbeds. When he woke up, Michele was gone — her bag, glasses, and medication still sitting untouched.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Chris immediately reported her missing. But according to him, Greek harbour police delayed the search, even suggesting she had “left with another man.”
Weeks later, the devastating truth emerged. Michele’s body was discovered on Fidonisi island, 40 km away. Authorities reported she was headless, partially unclothed, and her body had been damaged by fish in the water.
Forensic scientist Nikos Kifnidis confirmed she had drowned and ruled out foul play, saying:
“There were no other injuries… I concluded her death was a result of drowning. The swimsuit she wore, bought in the UK, helped identify her.”
Husband’s Anger at Authorities
Chris Bourda has publicly criticized local authorities for what he describes as negligence:

He said police took three hours just to file a missing person’s report.

He claims they dismissed his concerns and failed to properly search the beach.

He told reporters: “They didn’t do anything. Next time, they must act faster. My wife would never leave without her belongings or medication.”
Chris has since filed an official complaint about the way the case was handled.
Michele’s Struggles with Mental Health
Family reports reveal that Michele had previously battled depression and anxiety. She briefly went missing once before while living in London, after losing her job. On that occasion, police found her the same night.
Earlier this year, in February, she had another episode but was said to be recovering and “in good spirits” before the couple’s trip to Greece.
A Family in Mourning
What was meant to be a peaceful holiday by the sea became a devastating loss for Chris, who is now grieving the tragic and unusual circumstances of his wife’s death.
Her story serves as a reminder of both the fragility of life and the need for swift action in missing persons cases.
