Tragic Discovery in Greece
A weeks-long search for Michele Bourda, a 59-year-old mother from Glasgow, has ended in tragedy. Her body was found on the remote Greek island of Fidonisi, about 40 kilometers from the beach where she was last seen.
The grim discovery was made by the crew of a passing yacht. Michele’s husband, Chris Bourda, confirmed her identity and described his heartbreak, calling the discovery “the worst moment of my life.”
How Michele Went Missing
Michele disappeared on August 1 while vacationing with her husband in northern Greece. The couple had spent the morning swimming and eating crepes before relaxing on sun loungers at Ofrinio Beach.
Chris says he fell asleep, and when he woke up, Michele was gone. Her towel, medication, and bag were left behind. Despite extensive search efforts by police, coastguards, and private boats, no trace of her was found at the time.
Cause of Death Still Under Investigation
Authorities now believe Michele drowned, and her body was carried by strong sea currents before washing up on Fidonisi. Reports described her remains as “all bones” and missing her head, making identification difficult.
A full autopsy is pending to determine the exact cause of death.
Husband Criticizes Police Response
Chris, a pharmacist originally from Greece, expressed anger at what he called a slow and disorganized response from local authorities.
“It shouldn’t take three hours to file a missing persons report before a search begins,” he said.
Michele’s Struggles and Final Days
Family members revealed that Michele had previously battled depression and anxiety, and years ago briefly went missing in London during a difficult time. However, Chris said she had been doing well recently and was excited about their trip to Greece.
The couple had been married for decades and shared a daughter. Chris recalled their last day together: “We swam, we ate crepes, she wanted to relax. I fell asleep, and when I woke up—she was gone.”
A Painful Ending for the Family
For Michele’s loved ones, weeks of uncertainty have come to a heartbreaking end. The Greek police investigation continues, with the British Foreign Office also involved.
