Mom raised us alone. She worked two jobs, often skipping meals so we could eat. I remember the freezing winters in our tiny apartment, when our kind neighbor, Mrs. Jenkins, brought us food just so we wouldn’t go hungry.
Over the years, Mom worked her way up, moved us into a better home, and eventually sent both of us to college. But while I remembered the hardships, Samira didn’t. She grew up selfish, carefree, and always asking Mom for money.

Attached was a handwritten note from Mom:
“Nicole, I told you I understand everything. I know who truly cares and who acts out of selfish motives. That’s why I leave everything to you. Keep your kindness and humanity. I love you. — Mom.”
I sat in the hospital hallway, tears streaming down my face. Even in her final days, Mom protected me.
