Erika Kirk has opened up about the devastating last moments before her husband, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, was assassinated earlier this month. In an emotional interview with The New York Times, she revealed the final message she sent him the morning he left for Provo, Utah, to begin his highly anticipated campus tour.
“He got up, and I could hear him eating something in the kitchen. He’d been waiting all summer to begin touring,” Erika recalled. Because he left so early, she didn’t get the chance to kiss him goodbye—so she sent a short but powerful text: “I love you.”
Just hours later, 31-year-old Charlie was fatally shot in the neck while speaking at Utah Valley University.
Erika’s Painful Journey After the Tragedy
Mid-flight to Utah, Erika learned of her husband’s death. “I’m looking at the clouds and the mountains,” she said. “It was such a gorgeous day, and I was thinking: This is exactly what he last saw.”
At the hospital, a sheriff warned her not to view Charlie’s body due to the trauma caused by the gunshot wound. But Erika insisted, determined to see him one final time. She described the heartbreaking moment:
“His eyes were semi-open. And he had this knowing, Mona Lisa-like half-smile. Like he’d die happy. Like Jesus rescued him.”
Choosing Faith Over Anger
Since the tragedy, Erika has leaned heavily on her Christian faith to find strength. When asked about the suspected shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, and whether she wanted him to face the death penalty, Erika gave a powerful response:
“I do not want this man’s blood on my ledger… that keeps me from being in heaven, from being with Charlie.”
Her last text, “I love you,” has now become both a farewell and a vow—to carry Charlie’s memory with her, to honor his legacy, and to continue living guided by faith and hope.
