Nine-year-old Emma, battling leukemia, had one final wish — to marry her best friend, DJ. With the help of her family and community, her dream came true in a beautiful, emotional ceremony that touched hearts around the world.
A Parent’s Deepest Fear
For Alina and Aaron Edwards, life changed forever when their nine-year-old daughter, Emma, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. From the moment they heard the devastating news, they refused to give up hope. Together, they fought alongside their brave little girl, believing she would overcome the disease.
But after months of treatment and countless hospital visits, doctors gave them the heartbreaking news that there was nothing more they could do. Despite their pain, Emma’s parents wanted her final days to be filled with love and happiness.
A Wish Like No Other
When the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked Emma what her dream was, her answer surprised everyone.
She didn’t wish to meet a celebrity or visit a magical theme park. Instead, she wanted to marry her best friend and school sweetheart, DJ, a 10-year-old boy she’d known since the third grade.
Their love story was innocent and sweet. At just eight years old, they had already tried to hold a pretend wedding at school — complete with classmates as bridesmaids and groomsmen — though their teacher didn’t allow it to happen.
This time, however, nothing was going to stop them.
A Fairytale Wedding in Two Days
With the help of Make-A-Wish volunteers, family, and the local community, a wedding was arranged in just two days.
On the day of the ceremony, Emma arrived at the venue in a wheelchair, wearing a stunning purple gown — her favorite color. Her father gently wheeled her down the aisle as she smiled with pure joy.
DJ stood waiting at the end of the aisle, dressed in a little tuxedo, tears glistening in his eyes. When they exchanged rings and vows, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. The ceremony ended with a sweet, tender kiss — a moment that symbolized innocent love, courage, and hope.
A Love That Brought Light in Darkness
Emma’s mom spoke fondly of DJ, calling him her daughter’s “Boo Bear.” Throughout Emma’s illness, DJ remained a constant source of comfort — visiting her, sending little gifts, and always making her laugh when the days felt too heavy.
Their friendship was pure, filled with love and loyalty that even adults could learn from.
A Final Goodbye
Just weeks after the emotional ceremony, Emma’s health worsened. On July 11, 2023, after a 16-month battle with leukemia, Emma passed away peacefully, surrounded by her parents, siblings, and loved ones.
Her obituary described her as a bright and inspiring light — a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, and “wife” to DJ. She touched every heart that knew her with her courage, laughter, and love.
A Legacy of Courage and Love
Emma’s story is a reminder that love knows no age and that even the smallest hearts can leave the biggest impact. Her brave spirit continues to inspire families, showing that even in the darkest moments, love can create light.
Rest in peace, sweet Emma. 💜
Your courage, smile, and spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew you.
