Donald Trump has sparked major backlash after claiming the U.S. government owes him $230 million in damages — money that would come directly from taxpayers.
According to The New York Times, Trump filed two administrative claims with the Justice Department, accusing federal investigators of violating his rights during previous probes.
The first claim, filed in 2023, refers to the FBI’s Russia investigation from 2016, while the second involves the 2022 Mar-a-Lago classified documents search. Trump argues both actions were politically motivated and damaged his reputation.
Although the filings are not formal lawsuits, they fall under the Federal Tort Claims Act, which allows citizens to demand compensation for alleged government misconduct.
But this case is unlike any other — because Trump, as President of the United States, would be the one deciding whether or not to grant himself the payout.
Speaking from the White House, Trump acknowledged the awkward situation:
“It’s interesting, ’cause I’m the one that makes the decision, right? I’m suing myself,” he said. “I’ll say, ‘Give me X dollars,’ and I don’t know what to do with the lawsuit.”
The 79-year-old added that he would not use the money for personal gain, suggesting it might go toward a new White House ballroom or be donated to charity.
“I was damaged greatly,” Trump said. “Any money I would get, I’d give to charity. But it’s strange — I’d be paying myself.”

The controversy drew sharp criticism from actor Ethan Hawke, who discussed the situation on ABC’s The View.
He referenced former president Jimmy Carter, who sold his family’s peanut farm to avoid conflicts of interest while in office.
“Is anybody here old enough to remember when Jimmy Carter gave up his family farm to make sure he didn’t have a conflict of interest?” Hawke said. “It’s called integrity — and it’s starting to show the lack of it.”
Social media quickly lit up after Hawke’s remarks. On Reddit, one user wrote,

He explained that because Trump’s own administration oversees the Justice Department, his appointed lawyers could effectively decide whether he wins or loses.
“People who serve him would be deciding whether he gets the money,” Gershman said. “That’s a clear ethical conflict.”
