A faint rustle in the dark. A racing heart. And a flashlight reveal that left me questioning everything. Was it just my imagination — or something more?
I’ve always told myself that childhood fears fade with age. Shadows, strange creaks, that feeling of being watched — all just tricks of the mind. Monsters aren’t real.
At least, that’s what I believed. Until last night.
It Started With a Sound
I had just switched off the light and settled under my blanket when I heard it — the faintest rustle. Almost like fabric brushing against wood.
I froze.
The sound came again. Longer this time. Like something shifting.
My heartbeat drummed in my ears. I knew the logical explanation — wind, pipes, maybe a mouse. But a quieter voice in the back of my mind whispered: What if it isn’t?
The Moment of Decision
I stayed perfectly still, every muscle tense. One option was to hide under the covers and pray it stopped. The other was to check.
Slowly, I reached for my phone. The small click of the flashlight switching on felt deafening in the silence.
I leaned over the edge of my bed, light spilling into the darkness below.
What I Saw… Or Didn’t See
Dust bunnies. An old sock. Empty space.
I exhaled in relief, almost laughing at myself. But the laugh died in my throat when I noticed something strange.
That sock? I’d thrown it away weeks ago.
And as I backed away from the bed, phone still in hand, I swear I heard it again — a whisper, so close I could feel the air shift.
I didn’t check a second time.
