A diver exploring Russia’s Volga River uncovered a missing couple’s car nearly 10 years after they vanished. Police were shocked by what they found inside.
A chilling discovery has solved a mystery that haunted two families for nearly a decade.
In central Russia’s Chuvash Republic, a local diving enthusiast made a shocking find while exploring the Volga River. At the bottom of the murky waters, he spotted a car — and inside were the remains of a young couple who had been missing for almost 10 years.
The couple, 25-year-old Ilya Zhirnov and 22-year-old Kira Cherkasova, vanished in December 2005. Ilya had borrowed his father’s car to pick Kira up from work in the city of Cheboksary. That night, they were never seen again.
Despite extensive searches, police eventually had to close the case due to a lack of evidence. Their families spent years in anguish, not knowing what happened.
That changed when the diver alerted police to the submerged vehicle. Investigators managed to pull the car from the river, where it had been hidden for over a decade. Inside, they found skeletal remains. Surprisingly, the couple was identified through documents inside the car that survived years underwater.
Authorities believe the tragedy was likely caused by an accident on icy roads near the river, sending the vehicle plunging into the water. The case remains under investigation, and officials plan to release their full findings soon.
For the families, the discovery finally provides answers — though the pain of loss remains.
