A Tragic Discovery in California
Weeks of searching came to a heartbreaking end when authorities located the bodies of 27-year-old Whisper Owens and her 8-month-old daughter, Sandra McCarthy, inside a submerged vehicle in Northern California.
On August 17, 2025, search teams discovered their 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer underwater in a canal beneath a bridge on Highway 120 near Oakdale. The mother and infant had been missing since July 15, when Whisper left Sacramento to visit family in Fresno for a doctor’s appointment. She never returned home.
How Search Teams Found Them
Investigators had been tracking phone signals and narrowed the search to the area near the canal. With the help of advanced sonar equipment, divers eventually located the SUV after more than a month of uncertainty.
Authorities are still investigating how the vehicle ended up in the water.
A Family’s Grief
Whisper’s family described her as a devoted mother of four who would never have willingly disappeared. Her brother, Richard Owens, expressed the family’s devastation while thanking the community and search crews for their tireless efforts.
