Passengers on a Condor Airlines flight from Corfu, Greece, to Düsseldorf, Germany, lived through every traveler’s worst nightmare when their plane’s engine began spitting flames at 36,000 feet.
The Boeing 757, carrying 273 passengers and eight crew members, had been in the air for only 40 minutes when people on board heard a loud rattling noise. Soon after, flames were seen coming from the right engine—caught in shocking video footage by passengers and people on the ground.
Panic in the Cabin
One passenger, Leah Steininger, described the tense moments:
“We were already in the air, and then we heard a really loud rattling noise. After about 20 minutes, we received a message saying the transmission was completely off.”
Terrified passengers feared for their lives. Some even sent goodbye texts to their loved ones, believing they would not survive.
“It was an incredibly horrible experience. I already sent goodbye texts because I thought, ‘It’s over now,’” another passenger recalled.
Emergency Landing in Brindisi
The flames, caused by a turbine airflow disruption, forced the crew to make an emergency landing at Brindisi Airport in southern Italy. Thankfully, the plane landed safely around 8:15 pm, and all passengers disembarked without injuries.
Condor Airlines later released a statement explaining:
“The reason was a parameter indication outside the normal range caused by a disturbance in the airflow supply to the engine. Due to the fault message, it was precautionarily decided to divert to Brindisi.”
Shocking Footage Captured
Videos taken inside and outside the plane show flames shooting from the right engine, lighting up the night sky before dying out. One TikTok user who witnessed the scene from the ground posted:
“I was just chilling … then realized a plane was literally fighting fire in front of me.”

Though no one was injured, the frightening incident left passengers shaken. The emergency serves as a reminder that while air travel is statistically one of the safest ways to fly, unexpected mechanical issues can still create terrifying moments.
