What was meant to be a joyful beach day in sunny Florida turned into heartbreak for an Indiana family. Sloan Mattingly, 7, lost her life after being buried alive in a sand hole while playing with her older brother Maddox, 9, at Lauderdale-by-the-Sea on February 20, 2025.
The Mattingly family had traveled from Fort Wayne, Indiana, to escape the winter cold. But their holiday quickly became unforgettable for the worst possible reason.
The Freak Accident
Witnesses say the children were inside a large sand hole when the ground suddenly collapsed, trapping them beneath the heavy sand. Beachgoers rushed to dig them out while calling 911.
Emergency crews arrived with shovels and support boards, working frantically to free the siblings. Both were rushed to the hospital, but Sloan did not survive. Maddox was placed in critical condition, and his current recovery status remains uncertain.
A Mother’s Heartbreaking Words
On a GoFundMe page, Sloan’s mother, Therese Mattingly, shared her grief:
“A freak accident happened while we are here on vacation, and it took away our greatest 7.5 years. We experienced the purest human being and we are forever changed by her.”
The fundraiser, which has raised nearly $150,000, will help cover funeral costs and bring Sloan home to Indiana.
Community Shock and Support
Family friends, neighbors, and strangers have flooded the Mattinglys with messages of love. One close friend remembered Sloan as “the funniest friend, the most loyal sister, and one of the greatest creations of her parents.”
Locals also expressed shock, with one resident saying:
“I’ve lived here 50 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this. I had no idea a sand hole could collapse and cause something so tragic.”
Another witness claimed the hole may have been dug earlier by an adult and not by the children themselves, describing it as nearly 18 feet long and 6 feet wide.
Beach Safety Warning
Following the tragedy, the American Lifeguard Association issued a warning about the dangers of digging deep holes in sand. They stressed the need for greater beach patrols and safety awareness to prevent similar accidents in the future.
Director Bernard J. Fisher II said:
“This heartbreaking incident is a reminder that beaches should remain places of joy and recreation, not danger. Awareness and prevention are key.”
