Four-Year Ordeal Comes to a Dramatic End
A shocking chapter in New Zealand has closed after three children missing for nearly four years were found safe following a deadly police shootout.
Their father, Tom Phillips, who vanished with them in 2021, was killed after opening fire on police during an attempted burglary at a farm supply store in Piopio.
The Police Confrontation
In the early hours of September 8, officers responded to a burglary report. Two quad bikes were stopped with spikes on the road.

One officer was shot in the head and is now in critical condition after undergoing surgery.

A second officer returned fire, killing the shooter, later confirmed as Tom Phillips.
Authorities revealed that one of the children was with him at the time of the gunfight but was not harmed.
With help from that child, police later found the two other siblings safe at a remote campsite. All three children are now receiving medical checks.
Mom Breaks Her Silence
The children’s mother, Cat Phillips, expressed relief and heartbreak in a public statement:

She said her family is “deeply relieved” that the ordeal is finally over and that her children, now aged 12, 10, and 9, can come home.

At the same time, she expressed sadness that the case ended in violence rather than peace.
“They have been dearly missed every day for nearly four years,” she said. “We are looking forward to welcoming them home with love and care.”
Gratitude and Compassion
Cat extended love to the injured officer and thanks to the community:

“We also extend our aroha (compassion and love) to those in the community who have been affected, and our heartfelt gratitude to the many people who have supported us over these past four years.”
She added that the family will now focus on helping the children reintegrate into a safe and stable environment after their long ordeal.

The Piopio community remains shaken by both the tragic death of Tom Phillips and the relief that the missing children were finally found safe.
Authorities and family members are now working together to support the children as they begin their path to recovery.
