The tragic death of 10-year-old Rebekah Baptiste has shaken the small town of Holbrook, Arizona, and raised urgent questions about how repeated warnings went unanswered.
Rebekah was found gravely injured on a highway in July after what prosecutors describe as a “campaign of abuse” by her father, Richard Baptiste, 32, and his girlfriend, Anicia Woods, 29. Despite emergency treatment, doctors said she died days later from “non-accidental trauma.”
A Pattern of Abuse
Court records reveal disturbing details: Rebekah endured forced exercise routines, violent beatings, belt lashings, and possible cigarette burns. Doctors also noted signs of sexual abuse, missing hair, and severe bruises.

Her uncle, Damon Hawkins, described the heartbreaking hospital scene:
“She was black and blue from her head to toe… two black eyes. The system failed her.”
Hawkins said he and his wife reported concerns to child services many times. The Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) confirmed it had received dozens of complaints dating back to 2015, even removing the children once—only to return them later.
Red Flags Ignored
Teachers raised alarms after noticing injuries, but Rebekah and her siblings—ages 8 and 6—often covered for their parents.
In one chilling incident, Rebekah reportedly jumped from a second-story window to escape the abuse. Her parents claimed she was only running to get water or find help.
At the time of her death, the family had been living in a remote yurt without proper electricity or showers, making it difficult for investigators to locate them despite an open case.
Parents Face Murder Charges
Richard Baptiste and Anicia Woods now face first-degree murder and child abuse charges. Their bonds were set at $1 million each. Both admitted to using harsh “discipline,” including belts, spanking, and punishing exercise, but prosecutors allege the abuse escalated fatally against Rebekah.
System Under Fire
In a statement, the Arizona Department of Child Safety acknowledged the devastating loss:
“Any time a child in our community is harmed, it deeply affects us all. Tragically, those who intend to harm children sometimes evade even the most robust systems designed to protect them.”
The department has launched a Safety Analysis Review to determine whether systemic failures contributed to the tragedy. Meanwhile, Rebekah’s younger siblings remain in protective custody as the community mourns a young life cut short by abuse.
