The Tragic Case of Jessica Brady
Jessica Brady, a 27-year-old engineer at Airbus, began experiencing alarming symptoms including abdominal pain, vomiting, coughing, and weight loss. Determined to find answers, she sought medical help on 20 separate occasions over six months.
Each time, her concerns were dismissed, and she was sent home without proper investigation. Her condition continued to worsen, but doctors failed to identify the cause.
Finally, out of desperation, Jessica turned to private healthcare. It was only then that she received the devastating news: stage four adenocarcinoma, a malignant cancer of the glandular tissue.
By the time of her diagnosis in late 2020, it was already too late. Jessica passed away just three weeks later.
A Legacy of Change – “Jess’s Rule”
Jessica’s mother, Andrea Brady, vowed that her daughter’s suffering would not be in vain. In her memory, she began campaigning for “Jess’s Rule,” a safety measure designed to prevent delayed diagnoses.
The rule states that if a patient seeks medical help three times for the same ongoing issue, doctors must escalate care—this could include additional tests, referrals, or specialist consultations.
Andrea said:
“Jess was determined people would understand how desperately she had tried to fight for herself. It became my duty to continue what she had started.”
After nearly five years of campaigning, Jess’s Rule has now been formally adopted, thanks to the support of politicians, doctors, and almost half a million people who signed petitions backing the initiative.
Government Response
UK Health Minister Wes Streeting acknowledged the tragedy, calling Jessica’s death “avoidable and unnecessary.”
He added:
“Thanks to Jessica’s brave family, her memory will help save lives by ensuring patient safety is always the priority.”
