A boy refuses to sleep indoors after a visit to the farm. A cow, a burned barn, and a hidden photo reveal a chilling family secret.
My younger brother Tim hasn’t slept in his bed since last autumn. He says our old cow, Daisy, “knows the truth.” It sounds like a ghost story, but to Tim it’s real.
Before this happened, Tim was the liveliest kid in the house—always running, laughing, and making noise. But something changed after our visit to the farm last fall.
Now he only speaks in whispers and sleeps in the barn beside Daisy every night. Mom calls it cute. Dad says Tim will grow out of it. But I’m not so sure.
One night I overheard Tim whispering to Daisy:
“I kept it a secret. You saw everything but stayed silent. Thank you.”
Daisy blinked slowly, as if she understood. My skin crawled. Later, Tim warned me never to open the old toolbox or look at the strange photo inside.
The next day Dad brought the toolbox from the truck. Inside was a dusty photo of a barn covered in vines—the same barn that burned down two years ago. When I asked Dad about it, he turned quiet. On the back of the photo was a tall, dark figure—something not quite human.
That night Tim stood at the top of the stairs, eyes wide.
“Don’t open it,” he begged. “Daisy knows the truth.”
The barn, the photo, the shadow—they were all connected. The next morning I went to where the barn used to stand. It was just ashes, but the air felt heavy. When I turned around, Daisy was staring at me.
Later, Tim finally whispered the truth:
“The shadow in the photo is real. The fire wasn’t an accident.”
Inside the toolbox were old fragments—fabric, a wooden sign with a strange symbol, and that faded photograph. I didn’t know what it meant, but Tim’s fear was real.
Since then, Tim has stayed quiet, confused, and distant. Daisy watches over him like she knows more than she can tell. Sometimes silence is the only answer you can trust.
