Barack Obama’s long-awaited Presidential Center has finally been revealed — but instead of praise, it’s drawing laughs and memes from every corner of the internet.
Nearly a decade in the making, the Obama Presidential Center spans 19 acres in Chicago’s historic Jackson Park and is set to open in spring 2026. The ambitious project includes a museum, Chicago Public Library branch, community spaces, gardens, playgrounds, and even a basketball court — a nod to the former president’s favorite sport.
According to the Obama Foundation, the center was designed to promote community, engagement, and civic spirit. The main museum building, standing 225 feet tall, was meant to symbolize four hands coming together — a visual metaphor for unity and collaboration.
However, not everyone is seeing it that way.
As construction footage began circulating online, social media users quickly turned the grand reveal into a meme fest. It all began when Sen. Ted Cruz posted a tongue-in-cheek remark on X (formerly Twitter), saying:
“Locating the Death Star in Chicago was a bold move.”
The joke took off instantly. Users began comparing the building’s massive concrete-and-granite design to everything from trash bins to Lego towers, and of course, the Death Star from Star Wars.
One user wrote, “It’s an Obamanation! Just like his presidency!” while another commented, “Looks like someone built a Lego set without the instructions.”
While many critics mocked the center’s unique appearance, others defended it, saying the project represents an important cultural and educational investment for Chicago’s South Side — Obama’s longtime home community.
The completed campus will feature a John Lewis Plaza, a fruit and vegetable garden named after Eleanor Roosevelt, and open spaces for outdoor movies and family events. Despite the trolling, the Obama Foundation remains confident that the center will become a symbol of inspiration and connection once doors officially open.
