When rude parents demanded that I stop eating on a plane because their child “might throw a tantrum,” I tried to stay calm. But what happened next made everyone realize who was really out of line.
Air travel can be stressful, but what makes it worse are passengers who believe the world revolves around them. That’s exactly what happened to me during a recent flight — and the way it ended still makes me shake my head.
It was a long six-hour trip, and I was exhausted after days of travel. When the flight attendants started serving meals, I finally opened my food tray and began eating quietly. I was just trying to relax and enjoy my meal — but not everyone was happy about it.
The woman sitting in front of me suddenly turned around and said, “Can you not eat right now? My son might throw a tantrum if he smells food.”
At first, I thought she was joking, but her expression was dead serious. Her husband joined in, saying, “Please wait until he’s asleep. It’s hard to calm him down once he starts crying.”
I was speechless. This was a public flight, not their private family space. I politely explained that I was very hungry and needed to eat. They rolled their eyes and muttered about “selfish people.”
A few minutes later, their son started screaming anyway — not because of my food, but because he wanted food too. The irony was hard to miss. The flight attendant came over to help and ended up giving the boy a snack from the service cart — the same meal I was eating.
Instantly, the child stopped crying. The parents sat there embarrassed while I quietly finished my meal in peace.
This experience reminded me of an important lesson: you can’t expect others to change just to make your life easier. Respect goes both ways.
