A brave man intervened to protect a young girl when a knife-wielding attacker struck on a London-bound train. Nine people suffered life-threatening wounds. Read what we know so far.
On the evening of Saturday 1 November 2025, a violent knife attack unfolded aboard a high-speed train travelling from London North Eastern Railway (LNER)’s 6.25 pm service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. The assault began shortly after the train departed Peterborough railway station in Cambridgeshire.
Passengers described chaos as an attacker, armed with a large knife, began stabbing people indiscriminately down the train carriages. One witness said:
“Run! Run — there’s a guy stabbing literally everyone and everything!”
🎯 The heroic intervention
Amid the panic, an older male passenger intervened to protect a younger girl who was under threat. According to eye-witnesses:
“There was a girl, bless her, who was really, really in a bit of a state because the guy actually tried to stab her — and one of the older guys … blocked it with his head.” He sustained serious injuries to his head and neck in the act of shielding her. Other passengers used jackets and clothing to stem his bleeding.
🚨 Casualties and response
In total, 11 people were taken to hospital; initially nine were reported to have life-threatening injuries.
A train staff member from LNER, who confronted the attacker, is also in life-threatening condition. Police described his actions as “nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved people’s lives.”
The attacker was arrested at Huntingdon railway station after the train made an emergency stop there. A 32-year-old man from Peterborough remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder; a second man initially arrested was later released without charge.
Authorities say the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
