Widow Erika Kirk opens up about the night before her husband Charlie Kirk’s assassination, how she learned of his death, and the haunting image she saw in the hospital that remains with her.
In a deeply emotional interview, Erika Kirk reflected on the last hours she spent with her husband, Charlie Kirk, before he was assassinated during a college speaking event on September 10, 2025.
The Evening Before
Erika recalled that the night before Charlie’s death, he was “so excited” for the upcoming event — what he believed would be a major talk.
He told her he wanted to get a “good night’s sleep” and promised they’d be together soon. Erika and their daughter slept in the main bedroom, while Charlie took their daughter’s room for quiet.
“He came in and he grabbed that [wedding ring and necklace] and then he left. I didn’t even get to give him a kiss goodbye,” she said.
The Moment She Learned the News
The morning of the event, while Erika was at her mother’s side in Arizona, she received a call from Charlie’s assistant that changed everything.
“Charlie’s been shot … he’s been shot, get the kids, get security…” she recounted.
She rushed to board a plane to Utah, but Charlie was pronounced dead before she arrived.
The Hospital Visit & What She Saw
Erika insisted on seeing Charlie’s body despite being advised not to. She said:
“With all due respect, sir. I want to see what they did to my husband and I want to give him a kiss because I didn’t get to give him a kiss this morning.”
What she saw stayed with her:
“When we walked into that room … he had this smirk on his face. That smirk … to me is that look of, ‘You thought you could stop what I’ve built… You got my body; you didn’t get my soul.’ ”
Erika’s Takeaway
According to Erika, Charlie had been aware of threats and safety concerns — she’d even asked him if he’d considered wearing a bulletproof vest. He apparently answered:
“If they’re going to get me, they’re going to get me.”
In the aftermath, Erika has stepped into her husband’s role leading the organization he founded, Turning Point USA, and promised to carry on his mission.
