Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during an event in Utah. Police say the rifle used carried ammunition engraved with political messages. A manhunt is underway for the suspect.

The tragic death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has shaken both his supporters and the wider political community. Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on September 10 while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University. Despite emergency medical treatment, he passed away about 90 minutes after the attack.

What Happened

Witnesses say a single gunshot rang out, striking Kirk and sending the crowd into panic. “I saw a bunch of blood come out of Charlie… his body went limp, and everybody dropped to the ground,” recalled Justin Hickens, who was standing nearby.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox quickly called the killing a “political assassination”, adding:

“We will hold whoever is responsible accountable to the full extent of the law. Utah still has the death penalty.”

Forensic Evidence and Surveillance

Authorities revealed that the shooter blended in with students before making his way onto a rooftop overlooking the event. Surveillance video shows the suspect arriving at 11:52 a.m., less than 30 minutes before firing the deadly shot.

After the attack, he was seen fleeing across rooftops and disappearing into nearby wooded areas. Forensic teams have collected palm prints, forearm marks, and a footwear impression at the scene, which are now under review.

Rifle With Political Engravings

Investigators recovered the suspected weapon — a .30 caliber bolt-action hunting rifle — in a wooded area near campus. Wrapped in a towel, the rifle still contained one spent cartridge and three unspent rounds.

According to multiple reports, the ammunition was engraved with phrases linked to transgender and antifascist ideology. While officials have not released the exact wording, they confirmed the engravings suggest a politically motivated attack.

Reactions and Tributes

Former President Donald Trump reacted to the tragedy on Truth Social, calling Kirk “a truly Great American Patriot.” Trump also ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.

In another message, Trump wrote:

“No one understood or connected with the youth of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me. Melania and I send our deepest sympathies to his wife Erika and their children.”
