The 60-year-old politician didn’t hold back as she reflected on her failed 2024 presidential campaign and shared surprising details about a private exchange with Donald Trump.
During an appearance at the Day of Unreasonable Conversation Summit in Los Angeles on Monday (October 6), Harris energized the crowd with her raw honesty and passion. Speaking at The Getty Center, she encouraged storytellers and creators to embrace their emotions in the current political climate before unleashing a blunt jab at the former administration.
“Because there is so much about this moment that is trying to make people feel like they’ve lost their minds, when in fact, these merfers are crazy!” Harris exclaimed, sparking loud cheers and applause from the audience.
Laughing at the crowd’s reaction, she added, “I call this The Freedom Tour.”
The event — co-chaired by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, producer Greg Berlanti, and Kerry Washington — featured discussions about free expression and the role of artists in modern politics. Harris also spoke candidly about the emotional toll of losing the 2024 election to Trump, describing it as “as painful as the death of [her] mother.”
“I had never felt that level of pain and grief except when my mother died, and I was grieving for the country,” she said.
Harris also commented on growing censorship concerns in Hollywood, noting that many creators are being pressured to stay silent. “Every person has to make that decision for themselves,” she said. “But there will always be risk associated with speaking truth.”
In her memoir, Harris shares a surprising phone conversation with Trump following the second assassination attempt on his life in September 2024. According to Harris, the then-President called her and promised to “be nicer” moving forward.
“How do I say bad things about you now? I’m going to tone it down. You’re going to see,” Trump allegedly told her, even adding that his daughter Ivanka Trump was a “big fan” of Harris.
