The family of Brazilian businesswoman Ana Carolina Silva, found dead in a hotel bathtub alongside her husband, claims she may have been forced to take drugs after toxicology tests revealed cocaine in her system.
Family Seeks Answers After Tragic Hotel Death
Authorities in Brazil are investigating the shocking deaths of businesswoman Ana Carolina Silva, 41, and her husband, police officer Jeferson Luiz Sagaz, 37, after both were found dead in a hotel bathtub just hours after celebrating their daughter’s birthday.
Toxicology results confirmed the presence of alcohol and cocaine in their blood, raising questions about what happened inside the motel room that night.
The couple had spent the day at a park celebrating their four-year-old daughter’s birthday before checking into the Dallas Motel in São José shortly after midnight. They told family members they planned to go out clubbing later that evening.
When the couple failed to return the next morning to pick up their child, relatives reported them missing. Police soon discovered their bodies in the bathtub.
Police Confirm Cause of Death
Investigators initially ruled the cause of death as heatstroke. According to officials, the couple’s combination of cocaine and alcohol use may have dulled their ability to sense danger while in 122°F (50°C) hot water.
Police also found a space heater running on high inside the room, which may have worsened the effects of extreme heat.
Chief of Police Felipe Simão Gomes explained:
“It may be that their physical constitution was not compatible with a substance like cocaine, especially when combined with alcohol. They didn’t have the habit of using it.”
Authorities conducted 16 forensic tests, reviewed CCTV footage, and inspected the couple’s car. Results ruled out other possible causes, such as drowning, carbon monoxide, electrocution, or foul play.
Family Raises Disturbing Possibility
Despite the official report, Silva’s family has questioned the findings, claiming she was not a regular drug user and may have been forced to ingest cocaine.
Her relatives insist that Ana Carolina, who owned a nail salon, was devoted to her family and her business. They believe something about the case doesn’t add up.
Dr. Fernando Oliva da Fonseca, Director of Forensic Medicine, noted that cocaine and alcohol together can lead to dangerous effects:
“The person can lose consciousness and not react to the high temperature, leading to heatstroke and organ failure.”
Final Autopsy Results
Chief Medical Examiner Andressa Boer Fronza confirmed that the pair died of exogenous poisoning, a combination of severe dehydration, thermal collapse, and organ failure.
No evidence of violence or third-party involvement was found. Authorities concluded the deaths were sudden and accidental.
Silva and Sagaz had been together for nearly 20 years, with no record of domestic issues. Their daughter is now under the care of relatives.
A Heartbroken Community
The tragedy has left the local community in mourning. Silva’s nail salon released a statement honoring her memory:
