When most people think about aging, they imagine wrinkles or grey hair — not a nose that won’t stop growing. But for 68-year-old Gerard McAliece from Kilmacolm, Scotland, that’s exactly what happened.
About six years ago, Gerard noticed subtle changes in his nose. At first, he dismissed it as a harmless sign of aging. But over time, his nose grew larger and more misshapen, eventually hanging over his mouth and changing his daily life.
“It just kept growing and growing, and as much as possible, I tried to ignore it,” Gerard shared.
A Condition That Took Over His Life
As the growth worsened, Gerard began drawing stares and whispers whenever he went out.
“People would look, some even turned away,” he recalled. “But my view was — this is me. Take me as I am.”
Still, the physical challenges became impossible to ignore. The enlarged tissue made it difficult to eat, drink, or even kiss his wife, Carol.
“I hadn’t been able to properly kiss her for years,” he admitted.
Doctors eventually diagnosed Gerard with Rhinophyma, a rare skin condition caused by the overgrowth of sebaceous glands and connective tissue in the nose. The condition often worsens gradually, leading to thickened, bulbous skin.
A Struggle for Help and Hope
Unfortunately, Gerard’s initial attempts to get medical help didn’t go well.
“When I went to the doctor, they just asked if I could breathe,” he said. “When I said yes, they said that was fine. I didn’t think anyone would take it seriously because they’d see it as cosmetic.”
That changed when Carol, his wife, stepped in. After reading about other Rhinophyma patients, she contacted Ever Clinic in Glasgow.
When Gerard arrived, the specialists were stunned by the severity of his condition.
They immediately scheduled a four-hour reconstructive surgery led by Dr. Cormac Convery, a renowned facial specialist.
“They said it was the biggest job they had ever tackled,” Gerard recalled. “It was going to be a real challenge, but they did it all in one session.”
A Life-Changing Transformation
The results were remarkable. For the first time in years, Gerard could look in the mirror and recognize himself again.
“The result has been fantastic,” he said. “It has totally turned my life around. Carol says I’m back to being the man I used to be.”
Now, Gerard enjoys going out for a pint, meeting people, and dining in restaurants — simple joys that had once become impossible.
Doctors Praise the Success and Raise Awareness
Ever Clinic’s managing director, Jonathan Toye, confirmed Gerard’s case was one of the most extreme they had ever seen.
“Gerard was easily the most advanced case of Rhinophyma we’ve treated,” Toye said. “Sadly, it’s not uncommon for patients to struggle getting the help they need through the NHS. Dr. Cormac really outdid himself — the result is outstanding.”
A Message of Hope
Gerard now hopes his story inspires others facing similar conditions to take action sooner.
“If there’s anyone out there in the position I was in, my advice is — don’t wait. Just do it,” he urged.
